The increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogenic Escherichia coli isolates has highlighted the need to investigate complementary therapeutic approaches, such as bacteriophage therapy. This study aimed to compare the effects of bacteriophage therapy, enrofloxacin, and their combination on histopathological lesions of the ileum. Forty male Sprague–Dawley rats were allocated to five groups: negative control, infected control, phage-treated, enrofloxacin-treated, and combination-treatment groups. Infection was induced by intraperitoneal inoculation of 106 colony-forming units (CFU) of avian-pathogenic E. coli. Phages were administered at a dose of 108 plaque-forming units (PFU), while enrofloxacin was administered at 5 mg/kg/day. On day 14, ileal sections were collected, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and examined histopathologically. The greatest and least tissue damage were observed in the infected-control group and the phage–enrofloxacin combination-treatment group, respectively. Treatment with phages or enrofloxacin alone also reduced lesion severity. These findings indicate that combination therapy was associated with better preservation of ileal mucosal architecture; however, dedicated studies are needed to establish whether the observed effect is synergistic.
