English

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites naturally produced by molds and cause food contamination in humans and livestock. Aflatoxin M1 is a major carcinogenic compound found in milk and dairy products and poses a permanent risk to consumers. The aim of the study was to determine the occurrence of aflatoxin M1 in various types of milk supplied in Shiraz city using ELISA. 80 milk samples including 20 raw milk samples, 20 pasteurized samples, 20 ESL samples and 20 sterilized samples were randomly sampled in spring, summer, autumn and winter and were transferred to the laboratory of Islamic Azad University of Shahrekord under cold conditions for the evaluation of aflatoxin M1 levels by ELISA according to the instructions of the assay kit (Biopharm-R, Germany). The results showed that all samples (100%) were contaminated with aflatoxin M1, but none of the samples exceeded the Iranian standard. Accordingly, the concentration of contamination in raw milk was 30.77, pasteurized milk 32.45, ESL milk 27.39, and sterilized milk 24.24 ng/liter. Considering the contamination lower than the Iranian standard; Europe and America in the present study, the use of the types of milk supplied in Shiraz city cannot pose a serious risk to the health of consumers.
